Did This Cliffhanger Work? | Legend of Ruby Sunday Review
Переглядів 26 тис.18 годин тому
Despite seemingly only just starting, the Doctor Who Series 14 finale is already upon us! The Legend of Ruby Sunday is the first part of the epic climax and sees The Doctor asking for UNIT's help to reveal the identity of the mysterious Susan Triad and the identity of Ruby Sunday's birth mother, before everything goes wrong, the TARDIS turns evil and a bad dog shows up. But is it any good? As a...
Why I Didn't Like Rogue | Doctor Who Review & Analysis

This definitely won't be controversial at all. Doctor Who Series 14 is nearing the end and we just took a trip back to Bridgerton-land for S14E06: Rogue, where The Doctor and Ruby Sunday face off against weird bird cosplayers alongside legally distinct Captain Jack Harkness. I wasn't a fan. But why? What about this episode didn't work for me? Well, as always, that's what I'm here to find out! ►...

So Doctor Who just dropped "Dot and Bubble" the fifth episode of Series 14, which takes us to the social media dystopia Finetime, where giant slugs are eating entitled rich influencers as The Doctor and Ruby Sunday try to save the world from behind a screen. Reaching the midway point of Doctor Who Series 14 and it's time for one of the weirdest episodes I've ever seen. Doctor Who is so back! After a polarising opening run of episodes, Doctor Who Series 14 has really delivered with Steven Moffat's newest masterpiece: Boom (S14E03). This incredible story traps the 15th Doctor on a landmine as he and Ruby Sunday are forced to try and save the day without their usual skills. There was such potential with the paradoxes created by Susan Triads killing people in different times on, at least, Earth and having a Time Lord but, nope, ignored.

    All it needed was a simple, Sutekh has only been on The Tardis since Wild Blue Yonder (Susan Twists first appearance and first Tardis groan sound) And the sand just escapes from the earth, not every planet the doctor landed on ever. Instead of overinflated the stakes it needed to make sense.

    The whole episode was just riddled with problems - from the pacing feeling completely off from the start (as you mention with the rush to have everything end in 5 minutes, which is obviously not sticking), to the lack of competency from the Doctor (an issue from the whole season), to the myriad of plot holes, and the extremely disappointing conclusions and answers. It genuinely feels like RTD wrote an interesting background plot for the series and then decided that "the audience might guess it" so chose THE most boring conclusion possible despite the ridiculous plot holes that come along with it. A second draft being needed is generous, I think RTD needs a writers' room that makes him redraft things a good 5 or more times. At least then things might be satisfying, even if his desire to write with plot holes can't be fixed!

    The twist is also ruined because the ambulance (which was wayy after 2046) couldn’t find ruby’s family, which implies that they exist in no records at all - it makes no sense to then have her family in records

    The big issue I've not heard people talk about with the "kind woman" scene is that the synopsis for the episode literally says nothing can save the world "except, perhaps, one woman" and then RTD reiterated in as a tease the world would be saved by "a very kind woman" yet by the end of the episode you forget she was even in it. And like you say the spoon feels so irrelevant to actually saving the day anyway. It seems to emphasise how unaware he is of what he wrote! The other issue is we never establish that metal is scarce. I mean why would Sutehk want to destroy all metal. He only says he's destroying living things. This is never established. So it's such a jarring moment to suddenly just accept there's no metal.

    I bet rubys dad is the trickster because by hiding the mother then that means it was the trickster who made the mother a mystery and makes more sense as to why sutekh couldn’t find out who she is and works with the tricksters theme paralleling the music of the song Ruby has in her heart

    Luke Skywalker didn’t have any special heritage at the time and the Force wasn’t anything exclusive. Anyone could become a Jedi, some are just more talented to begin with. Luke has importance only because his father was Emperor’s top guy. Even with Anakin all these Chosen One stuff was just something the Jedi believed in, nothing more.

    Totally agree it’s no where near as bad as Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos (which btw I love how you’ve just Chinese whispered to death at this point 😂), like it literally didn’t even feel like a finale, just a mid season episode only with ever so slightly higher stakes than normal that even then you don’t feel like are so much as they have no real major impact, like Tim Shaw targeting Earth with the great big laser but not showing you at all what’s actually happening down there as it hits it

    I do think that Sutekh's interest in the mother could have been actually explained quite easily giving it more context. For example he could have been interested because when she walked away from Ruby something died in her so that he saw her both as a life and dead which intrigued him so much, and because the tardis was never this close to something like this he got intrigued and obsessed, triggering all that snow anytime the Doctor and Ruby mentioned it causing the snow.

    My rewrite rant for Empire Of Death below(I am by no means a writer): I am going to try and make a bulleted list of what could have been done to make this more satisfying in my personal perspective. I will keep it grounded to what has been implied or shown previously, my new concepts having to have a basis in the show's themes and such. 1. The start of the episode should have been Mel hitting Susan with a chair and giving a witty one liner ("I bring Mel's gift of chair" or something meme worthy). This feels more interesting than just pulling The Doctor back. Also the Doctor should snap out of the shock and ask people to run and escape with him and Mel, and Susan chasing them and killing off the people with the gift of death, a horror movie chase vibe to sell the death theme. 2.Have UNIT and Kate immediately respond without prompt by The Doctor firing at Sutekh, and Kate ordering the Vlinx to engage some technobabble anti-Artron energy containment field or displacement beam at Sutekh. We see in "Legend of Ruby Sunday" that artron energy is used for the time window, so it's relevant. Older fans will recognize it. Have the displacement beam or whatever actually stun Sutekh and Harbinger, as well as Susan, who we see stumble in pain allowing Mel and The Doctor to escape, get on the motorbike back to UNIT, The doctor on the line with Kate what they're doing. 3.Kate should explain developing TARDIS targeting technology with the Vlinx, using that to target Sutekh, the Doctor realizing Sutekh has bound himself to the TARDIS, and thus has absorbed this weakness, as the Doctor explains to Mel whats artron energy and why that's working. 4. Kate should evacuate everyone as she notices the containment or beam start to fail as Sutekh taunts her for her attempt and exclaims the imminent joy he will have in personally killing her. Everyone leaves and gets the rest of UNIT to start evacuating to a bunker or some safe room. Ibrahim should stay with Kate, cue the final speech to The Doctor, watch as Sutekh breaks free of the containment, swats Ibrahim away fatally, and then directly touches Kate, before devouring her whole as we hear her scream and then silence. Cue The Doctor as he expresses his fear that there's nothing to be done because Sutekh is too powerful, cue Mel's great line here as she drives to UNIT HQ.

      @ifemiquinones15 4 години тому

      5. Have Ruby in the time window watch the TARDIS become more solid as she begins to have intense flashbacks to locations and conversations of Doctors past. She's remembering things she shouldn't be able to. She's seeing things from strange perspectives. Have harbinger and Sutekh sense the strangeness of Ruby's presence below. Sutekh begins to his wave of death with Susan spreading it out, growing and consuming the city as shown. Cue scene with Doctor and Mel and wondering about the TARDIS and memory tardis, but include memory and time are one and the same, and memory is the true enemy of death, not simply life (this has been shown with Twice upon a time that memory is what makes us alive and a person). Doctor unable to find any other surviving UNIT members, piles of sand instead. Have Sutekh appear, kill the solider as she tries to attack, and question Ruby's past and powers, as it starts to snow and that makes Harbinger stay away The Doctor promises to Ruby to stop him, Sutekh explains he sensed the TARDIS in wild blue yonder and latched on to it, and yes the salt did allow him to further cement his grasp. Have him explain that being in the void and spread thin across the time tunnel changed his history, shaping him beyond the simple Osirian to a now god of death. The Doctor says it doesn't make sense and he'll stop him. Sutekh says he's fused his essence with the TARDIS and has projected his Susan clones back along the TARDIS' timeline, seeing into the TARDIS' memory banks and records, using that to destroy everything. Cue the memory TARDIS exit. Cue the scream and learning about Sutekh, with instead the Doctor questioning if he remembers anything correctly anymore, that Sutekh shouldn't be this god, but still an alien. Have Ruby snow show and the Doctor wonders. 6. Have an action sci-fi montage of scenes of the TARDIS landing on new and familiar planets, with some being the doctor Mel and Ruby helping the planet natives fight back by making it snow on the Susan clone, where it causes the Susan clone to crumble into sand, and other times Sutekh in his humanoid form with Harbinger exit the TARDIS, and begin wiping out the planet's life. 7. have a scene with the Doctor explaining to some alien from a new or familiar planet about what's happened with Sutekh over the last few months, trying to chase after them and continue his universal destruction. Have the alien person explain how the gift of death has also been destroying memory and erasing family lines. Have Ruby enter and listen to the alien person, who is now seemingly starting to grow weak and die, with the Doctor, the alien mention not remembering their mom or where they come from, and Ruby sharing the sentiment, causing the snow to restore the alien's memories, but not enough to save their life. Have Doctor and Ruby collect what they need to repair the memory TARDIS. Have Ruby grow frustrated with the Doctor's defeatist attitude, how she should confront Sutekh who seemed shocked and concerned by her, with Mel stepping in for the Doctor to talk Ruby Down. cut to Sutekh on Earth commenting on the death not being enough, how life still resists wherever he has brought his gift, confused how this remains. 8. Have the explanation of the perception filter, the 73 yards remark by Ruby, the Doctor asking about how she knows that, have her get the memories of 73 yards come flooding in, causing a snowstorm in the memory TARDIS. Mel begins to hear Sutekh's whispers because of this. Have her ask how come she's remembering living a whole other life. The Doctor examines her and her connection to memories and the TARDIS. He realizes the Roger Ap Gwilliam database, and takes Ruby for answers.

    • @ifemiquinones15
      @ifemiquinones15 4 години тому

      9. Same as they arrive, Mel being corrupted, the Doctor worried. cue mostly same scenes, except the reveal that Ruby's mother is herself. The Older version of her from that weird alternate timeline is the one who dropped her off. Suddenly that older version appears, and the Doctor sees it and sees Ruby and realizes what Ruby really is. Just then they're captured by Mel, and brought to Sutekh. 10. Have Sutekh ask Ruby to explain which god she is, and to join him or be destroyed. The doctor stopped, Ruby says she'll join him, then runs up to Sutekh and makes it snow around him. It doesn't work. Sutekh instead begins to turn Ruby to sand, the Doctor explains to Ruby to think of him, his life, his adventures, and she does so, which stops Sutekh from killing her. It restores her. Ruby and Sutekh ask how. The Doctor explains that when he split the TARDIS in "the giggle", it didn't turn out quite right because of Sutekh's presence around the TARDIS at the time. So his TARDIS still had Sutekh attached, but because memory and time are interconnected, the part of the TARDIS that stores its memories/track time got duplicated and dislocated and fell back in time to 2004. The Doctor explains that all his memories he had focused on, his granddaughter, the Susan clones resembling the time splinters of Clara, duplicate TARDISes, Donna and past companions, the TARDIS being alive in Idris, Rose absorbing and becoming one with the Time vortex and TARDIS etc. all those memories were projected back to that dislodged memory core or piece of TARDIS, which had been also plotting to fight back against Sutekh who was on the TARDIS in the giggle. The TARDIS perception filter turned itself into the Image of Ruby Sunday, with the memories shaping her life and existence (like how the power of thought and words in "The Last of the Time Lords" but with a part of the TARDIS instead) because of the residual toymaker play energy on that piece, and because of the changed nature of reality, and of time and memory, all this has made Ruby something special, a third TARDIS aside from the memory TARDIS and the true TARDIS corrupted by Sutekh. This is why memories keep changing. The Doctor tells Ruby to remember all the TARDISes as one, to remember herself, remember time. Mel touches the Doctor, turning him into sand. 11. Ruby tries her best to remember, but because she's blinded by her obsession with how she's her mother, she falters to Sutekh. But before he can completely erase her, she remembers The Doctor telling her about accepting that it doesn't matter where he came from, his family is who he's found, and he's found her now so she's that family. This brings Ruby back. Who remembers the TARDIS as one, or as a triad, and thus uses this to bring Sutekh inside, and back to where he first grabbed on to the TARDIS from the time vortex, and Ruby, in the memory TARDIS, grabs Sutekh before he could complete this, and she traps him inside the memory TARDIS with her. She remarks how because she's nothing but the essence of memories, how she's an orphan, how she's connected to time, she has nothing to lose trapping Sutekh in a fading and failing memory TARDIS with her. As long as we can remember life, then death can never truly win in the end. Memories can't be destroyed, not really. Even Sutekh would still remember his destruction, and thus life lives on him. Sutekh tries to revert back to jackal form in the memory TARDIS, but fails. Ruby prays the Doctor doesn't forget his family, found or chosen or given. Sutekh says before he disappears that Ruby is more than just memories, (a build up for the possible trickster story line). 12. Everything begins to change back to before as Sutekh fades away from existence. The Doctor and UNIT and Earth are all restored . Kate isn't restored, nor Ibrahim, as they were devoured whole by Sutekh. All the Susan clones and Harbinger are also not restored. The Doctor tries to find Ruby, locating her in 2004, Christmas day. He finds her passed out some distance away, as well as seeing the infant Ruby. The Doctor wakes Ruby and takes him with her in the TARDIS. Ruby asks him what is she, if she'll stay human. The Doctor says that he decided to remember her that way and so shes stayed that way now, the memory TARDIS fading took that special bit away from her. The Doctor to remember a mother, to think up someone for Ruby to be found by. and thus changing history and time one last time. Return to present day, and they seek and find Louise, a normal ordinary woman, and Ruby accepts her as the biological image she was made to resemble, but realizes her true mother has always been Carla. She goes home to Carla and Cherry with the bio mother and rejoice. cue departure scene with the Doctor. Cue Mrs. Flood end scene.

    • @ifemiquinones15
      @ifemiquinones15 4 години тому

      TLDR: I re-imagined the episode as more sci-fi nature, weird timey wimey shenanigans, and Ruby being a piece of the TARDIS actualized into a real existing person because of the psychic and profound connection to the Doctor. The power of memories shaping time and reality allow for life to defy and triumph in the face of the god of death. All because the TARDIS sensed the Doctor was in danger and did its best to help with a piece of it that was dislodged, leading to Ruby creating herself by influencing the Doctor to remember the memories she's based around. So many aspects of Ruby, whether it be her personhood or the narrative surrounding her, seen in the show feel like an amalgam of other characters and plots. So I took that as the basis of this whole reimagined finale essay.

    I would put this as the worst Doctor Who finale I have ever seen, the script was appalling, it was anticlimactic and totally left me thinking Do I want to continue watching this utter rubbish. Nothing worked. Yes there were good bits of CGI, but overall, my only conclusion is If this is the rubbish, Davies is going to present the viewer, perhaps its high time either Davies goes or the programme is cancelled. This was the worst season of Doctor Who ever.

    i think the only misstep in your review is the bit around 18:00- its pretty clearly shown that ruby cant read the dna results, as they have to recover the information at unit hq... if she knew the id of the mother, she'd just be able to tell the vlinx her name and boom. and she wouldnt be as shocked learning she was an ordinary woman

    I think the whole "the mother is no one special, the special thing is what we made of her" can be a good message, it just does not work with all the setup with the snow, the pointing and sutekh caring at all (wich still doesnt make sense to me) and the way he was efeated theough breaking a tv screen is so damn stupid, like I dont mind the main part of the episode, but the end minutes are so damn infuriating to me, the worst imo is when ruby said "my real mom" wich is such a punch in the face for all foster parents and just seems tactless and rude.

  • @RiceCracker87

    I think the Susan Triad's would've worked better if the Doctor and Ruby never noticed them in the previous episodes. Them noticing this woman popping up this season begs the question of why the Doctor has never noticed her before in his thousands of previous adventures. Would've been more fun as a mystery for the fans as well if they didn't get any answers until the end. Wouldn't even have to rewrite the finale too much, the Doctor can still head over to UNIT to sort out the Ruby's Mum mystery and the Susan stuff can unfold a bit more naturally. Would also explain why he chooses to do the time window stuff instead of dealing with triad technologies, which seems like a far more time sensitive priority.

    Rowling is demonised for saying men and women are fundamentally different. Whereas Tennant gets awarded by saying a black woman who thinks differently than he does shouldn't live. One of these is not like the other.

    "You should not have come back." - Darth Vader to RTD, probably. But seriously, RTD has been so terrible, with poor retcons and cheap mystery box clickbait. Doctor Who is a show about moving forward.

    The issue with season 2 for me is Rose, she was great at the time but since her we've had Clara, Martha, Donna, Amy, River and Yaz, they're what I consider strong, independent companions who hold their own far better than Rose did, the illusion of Rose has eroded since being given all these fantastic companions, which I don't think is a bad thing

    I think that RTD should've taken notes from episode 7 instead of 8. Have Ruby never find out, have her move on. Like you said, it would've added to the scene with her and Sutekh.

    I definetly dont see this 2 parter fledged out to an flux like series, but I would liked it to be an 3 parter. I think the basic Idea was very great, but it would have needed more time to execute.

    Wouldn't it have made more sense to have had the Beast from The Satan to be The One who Who Waits?. The Beast could have latched onto the Tardis before falling into the black hole at the end of the episode. Also, the Beast was an actual god from before the dawn of time. The original evil.

    I really really, feel like Sutekh should have been maybe a two season maybe three season villain, built up with little clues and hints dropped here and there but not overt that might have been better maybe still like em though

    i agree that the episode was ridiculously underwhelming but the one thing i want to point out is that im pretty sure that there was quite literally nothing on the dna test screen. that’s why ruby dropping the screen feels somewhat satisfactory. ruby still doesnt understand it herself, why would sutekh? (another note, im glad you pointed out how goofy that one shot was. its awful and me and my friends found it so funny)

    My thoughts re: Sutekh v. other introduced “gods” Toymaker and Maestro is that leaving Sutekh only in cranky winged jackal made made him seem less threatening than Toymaker or Maestro - even though he was killing the universe more effectively than the first two. Having cranky winged jackal as the means by which Sutekh held onto the TARDIS (I do wonder how he felt about Jack & Clara hanging on as well) is a great concept. But having him then transform into an update of the Pyramid of Mars manifestation. Having a strutting, ominous baddy coming to Ruby for the screen or hurling the Doctor across the room with a green powered gesture would have been a plus. Other fails include the kindly woman. What this needed was to have a reason to care about the woman in terms of connecting the woman to a planet we’ve been to in NewWho or Classic Who. So that when the Doctor identifies the world she lived on it would have more impact than some rando from a rando planet. Yes, we don’t know every planet the Doctor has been … but this is a situation where knowing she was from a planet as known as the Oodsphere or Skaro. Having Ruby’s mom be an ordinary woman who left her child at a church because of the nature of her home life is great. What fails though are all of the elements that were part of the misdirects. The cloak, the pointing, the snow, the Carole of the Bells, everything is … poof …nothing. Series 2 needs to do better.

    “It’s made of hopes and dreams” I cannot tell you how much that explanation bugs me. There’s leaning into fantasy, then there’s insulting the audience. Could have said “this is something TARDISes do when they’re in distress, its like an escape pod”. But no, it’s made of ephemeral concepts. If this meant like “the old rig is held together by hopes and dreams” like a figure of the speech. It’s just not how the line read.
